InsectCare

InsectCare is an international three-year research project (starting in 2026) dedicated to the study and conservation of pollinators and aquatic insects. Together with colleagues from Magdeburg-Stendal University of Applied Sciences and Polish partners from the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn and the Poznań University of Life Sciences, innovative monitoring and restoration approaches are being developed to derive practical recommendations for nature conservation, agriculture, and municipalities.

A particular focus of Working Group on Freshwater and Restoration Ecology is the development and application of novel technologies for monitoring aquatic insects. In field laboratories located in the Drömling Biosphere Reserve (Germany) and the Wel Landscape Park (Poland), video-based monitoring systems with AI-supported analysis as well as biotelemetry approaches are being used to investigate habitat use and behavioral patterns of aquatic insects. The knowledge generated within the project will subsequently be integrated into the digital “Insect Knowledge Hub”, which will serve as a future platform for teaching and learning.
